Out-of-Country Voting

Zinda Magazine urges all Iraqis of all ethnicities and religions - Assyrians in particular - to participate in this week's elections in Iraq.  To help you make an educated decision Zinda Magazine has prepared the most comprehensive list of candidates from all participating coalitions, a complete list of all Christian candidates (in English), and voting locations around the world.

Please take a few hours from your daily plans, work, studies, or leisure and go out and vote.

In the last two elections on 30 January and 15 October 2005 not every Assyrian, Chaldean, and Syriac was given an equal opportunity to vote in Iraq.  Hundreds of thousands of eligible voters were never able to cast their votes for their Christian candidates.  The officials in Iraq cannot guarantee that this injustice will not be repeated this week.  Therefore, it is extremely important that Assyrians, Chaldeans, and Syriacs outside of Iraq who are not faced with such injustices and security issues, take every measure to vote at the predesignated voting locations around the world.

The voices of the Christians in Iraq - Assyrians, Chaldeans, and Syriacs must be heard and represented in the Iraqi parliament.  Your vote truly counts!

What am I voting for?

On December 15, 2005, Iraqi voters will elect a Council of Representatives to a four year term. There are 307 political entities and 19 coalitions contesting the elections for the 275 seats in the Council of Representatives.

The Iraq Out-of-Country Voting Program, or Iraq OCV, is an operation organized to enable Iraqis living outside of Iraq to register and vote in the upcoming elections for the Iraqi National Assembly. The Iraq OCV is supervised by the Independent Electoral Commission of Iraq (IECI).  OCV is assisted by the International Foundation for Election Services (IFES) which gives advice only and has no authority or responsibility in the process.

Voters will now be able to register and vote on the same day.

Who Can Vote?

Who Can Vote: Iraqi citizens or those that can attain citizenship. Born on or before December 31, 1987.

Voters will be required to present two forms of identification. Voters who participated in the election earlier this year will be asked to present their voter registration card to establish their eligibility, as well as a second picture form of identification.

The eligibility to vote is determined by the father, not parents in general. If your father was born in Iraq, you are eligible. The IECI has ruled under the current law that the father determines eligibility.
